“We teach the student, not the curriculum”
5 Ways to Boost Math Confidence
1. Remove the Timer
Pressure is the enemy of confidence. Tell your child, “Take all the time you need,” to lower their cortisol levels immediately.
Try This:
Instead of saying “Finish this in 10 minutes,” try: “Let’s explore these problems at your own pace today.”
2. Use “Manipulatives”
Use objects like LEGOs or coins. Seeing and touching the math makes abstract concepts “click”.
Try This:
Physicalize division by sharing 12 cereal pieces into 3 groups to see the total.
3. Celebrate the “Near Miss”
If they get an answer wrong, find the logic they got right to keep their motivation high.
Try This:
“I love how you correctly aligned the place values, even if the final sum is slightly off!”
4. Narrate the Math
Ask them to “teach” you how they got the answer. This shifts them into a state of authority.
Try This:
“I’m stuck on this regrouping step. Can you show me your ‘teacher’ way of explaining it?”
5. Focus on “Yet”
If they say “I can’t do this,” remind them: “You can’t do this *yet*”.
Try This:
“You haven’t mastered this strategy *yet*, but every mistake is your brain growing!”
